A private shore in the Maldives

The appeal of the Maldives is simple: your own stretch of lagoon, a reef a few strokes from the steps, and nothing on the horizon. With so many resorts, choosing well is not so simple. These three decisions matter most.

First, the atoll

The Maldives is a chain of atolls spread across the Indian Ocean, and each resort is usually an island of its own. Resorts close to Malé are reached by speedboat, sometimes within an hour of landing. Those further out need a seaplane, or a domestic flight and a boat.

Baa Atoll, northwest of Malé, is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. Its best-known site is Hanifaru Bay, where manta rays, and sometimes whale sharks, gather to feed in season, broadly the southwest monsoon months. Visits are regulated to protect the animals, so ask your resort how access works when you are there.

Then, the villa

Overwater villas are the famous image, and they are wonderful for sunrise swims and the sound of the lagoon at night. Beach villas usually offer more privacy and shade, more space, and an easier setting for children. Couples on a first visit often choose overwater. Families and repeat visitors often prefer the beach.

Look beyond the villa, too. Check the quality of the house reef, how far the villa is from the restaurants, and whether the island is small enough to walk or big enough to need a bicycle.

Then, the season

Broadly, the northeast monsoon months from around December to April are drier and calmer, and they are also the most popular. The southwest monsoon brings more rain and wind, and also the manta season in Baa Atoll. There is no bad month to go, only different ones.

The arrival

Seaplanes fly only in daylight, so a late international arrival can mean a night near Malé before the final leg. Your resort will usually arrange transfers and match them to your flight. Tell them your flight numbers early. The flight low over the atolls is, for many people, the moment the holiday begins.
