What we look for

  • Place. Does the hotel make the most of where it is? Think of a villa on the water, a palazzo on the canal, a house on the Atlantic shore.
  • Position. Does its location suit the journey? A hotel near the ferries, the passes or the old town saves hours.
  • Arrival. How do you get there, and is the transfer part of the pleasure?
  • Rooms. Are the best rooms worth the difference? Which ones should you ask for?
  • Season. When is it open, and when is it at its best?

How we work

Our stay recommendations draw on research: official sources, the properties' own published information and our editors' knowledge. Where an article is based on research rather than a visit, we say so. We do not publish invented reviews, ratings, prices or availability, and we do not describe visits we have not made.
