- Cherry blossom (usually early April) and autumn colour (usually November) are beautiful and very busy. Summer is hot and humid.
- Arrive
- Kansai International (KIX) or Osaka Itami (ITM). From Kansai International, the Haruka limited express reaches Kyoto Station in roughly 75–80 minutes. A private car takes about 90 minutes or more, depending on traffic.
- Getting around
- Kyoto's streets are narrow and parking is scarce, and Japan requires an International Driving Permit. Rail, taxis and a private driver work far better.

Northern Kyoto

Visit Kinkaku-ji as it opens, then the rock garden at Ryōan-ji. Rest in the afternoon and have a kaiseki dinner in the evening.
The eastern hills
Reach Kiyomizu-dera early and walk down through Higashiyama. Join a tea ceremony in the afternoon, then walk the lanes of Gion at dusk.
